1789 Legacy Society

The 1789 Legacy Society is composed of AEI's community of supporters who generously honor our values and the Institute through their philanthropic planning.

Why 1789?

The name 1789 Legacy Society encapsulates three things that lie at the heart of legacy giving at AEI:

Our Mission. In a moment that would transform our nation and world, on April 30, 1789, George Washington was sworn in as the first president of the United States. His inauguration marked the beginning of a singular experiment in individual liberty, free enterprise, and constitutional self-government, values that remain fundamental to the American Enterprise Institute today.

Our Institution. 1789 Massachusetts Avenue is AEI's home, the location of our headquarters in the beautiful Daniel A. D'Aniello building in Washington, DC, and serves as a symbol of the Institute itself.

Our Gratitude. More than AEI's home, 1789 Massachusetts Ave is also a historic building that once served as the residence of Andrew Mellon, US Treasury Secretary from 1921 to 1932 and visionary philanthropist. Mellon's legacy, most notably in founding the National Gallery of Art, reminds us how private generosity has profoundly shaped our nation—and the role our donors play as essential partners in shaping a freer, more prosperous America.

When you include AEI in your estate plans and join the 1789 Legacy Society, you are carrying this proud tradition forward and championing ideas that will preserve freedom, expand opportunity, and improve lives for generations to come.

When you make a planned gift to AEI, you are making a long-term investment in seeing our mission of defending human dignity, expanding human potential, and building a freer and safer world carried forward to the next generation. The AEI 1789 Legacy Society is our way of recognizing the critical supporters who have provided for AEI in their estate plans.

Planned giving options include:

As a member of the 1789 Legacy Society, you will receive our regular articles and publications, as well as an invitation to AEI's Annual Dinner—a black tie gala held in Washington, DC each year. Legacy Society members who give $100,000 or more annually are also invited to AEI's Chairman's Dinner, exclusive conference calls with AEI scholars, and regional council events and roundtables.

We know the importance and care involved in your estate planning decisions. Thank you for considering making AEI a part of your legacy. If you would like more information about planned giving opportunities or the 1789 Legacy Society, please contact us.
